Model answer (4 marks)

1. Use of condoms – condoms act as a physical barrier that prevents the transfer of infected bodily fluids during sexual intercourse.
2. Condoms also prevent direct contact with infected bodily fluids, thereby stopping the bacteria from entering the body.
3. Abstinence – not engaging in sexual activity removes the opportunity for the bacteria to be transmitted.
4. Abstinence eliminates the risk of transmission because there is no sexual contact and consequently no exchange of bodily fluids.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word ‘condoms’ and explain the barrier function; mention both fluid transfer and direct contact. Include ‘abstinence’ and state that it removes the risk by eliminating contact. Keep each point concise and use correct terminology.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing condoms with other contraceptives; forgetting to mention fluid transfer. Saying ‘abstinence is the only way’ without explaining why it removes risk.
