Common names differ between languages, countries and regions, so they can be confusing.
The binomial system gives each organism a unique two‑part name.
It is universal and used by scientists worldwide.
This avoids confusion – the same organism never gets two names and different organisms never share one name.

  • Use the word ‘unique’ to show understanding of binomial names. Mention that it is universal to gain full marks. Keep the answer concise – 4 points only.

Common mistakes

  • Using only one point about common names. Forgetting to mention the two‑part (genus + species) structure. Mixing up ‘binomial’ with ‘polynomial’ or other terms.
