Evolutionary trees illustrate the evolutionary relationships between organisms, showing how species are related through common ancestry.
They reveal the degree of relatedness, indicating which organisms share recent common ancestors and which are more distantly related.
Because the trees are based on shared evolutionary history, the resulting classification reflects true biological relationships, unlike classifications that rely only on physical traits which can be misleading.

- Use the word ‘illustrate’ or ‘show’ to link trees with relationships; mention common ancestry. Explain that relatedness is shown by branching patterns. State that this method is more accurate than morphology‑only classification. Include DNA/molecular data as evidence for constructing trees.
Common mistakes
- Confusing evolutionary trees with phylogenetic trees or ignoring the role of DNA evidence. Focusing only on physical characteristics and not explaining why this is less accurate. Using vague phrases like ‘shows similarities’ without linking to evolutionary relationships.
