Model answer (4 marks)

Organisms are grouped according to shared characteristics and structure.
The system uses seven hierarchical levels: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.
As you move down the hierarchy, each level contains smaller, more specific groups.
Members of the same group share more characteristics and are more closely related.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact terms (kingdom, phylum, etc.)
  • Show the hierarchy from broad to specific
  • Explain that similarity increases down the ranks
  • Keep answer concise and to the point

Common mistakes

  • Using the wrong order of taxa
  • Confusing ‘taxa’ with ‘species’
  • Omitting the fact that similarity increases down the hierarchy

  1. Organisms are placed into groups based on their characteristics / structure
