Model answer (4 marks)

Poly(propene) is produced by addition polymerisation of propene monomers, which contain a carbon–carbon double bond and are unsaturated. No small molecules are released during this process.

Nylon is produced by condensation polymerisation of diamine and dicarboxylic acid monomers, each of which has two reactive functional groups. During the reaction a small molecule, water, is released.

Thus, poly(propene) is made by addition polymerisation of unsaturated monomers with no loss of small molecules, whereas nylon is made by condensation polymerisation of bifunctional monomers with the release of water.

Examiner tips

  • Use the words "addition" and "condensation" explicitly. Mention the unsaturation of propene. State that water is the small molecule released in nylon. Keep the answer concise to fit the 4‑mark limit.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the type of polymerisation (e.g. calling nylon addition). Forgetting to mention the unsaturated double bond in propene. Omitting the release of water in nylon.
