Nylon is a synthetic polymer widely used in the textile and manufacturing industries. It is strong, flexible, and resistant to wear.

Model answer (4 marks)

Nylon is made by condensation polymerisation.

The polymer has a very high tensile strength, so it can withstand the pulling forces that act on a rope.

It is also flexible, which means it will not snap or crack when bent.

Finally, nylon is resistant to wear and is durable, so the rope will not wear out quickly.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact phrase "condensation polymerisation". Show the link between high tensile strength and rope use. Mention flexibility and wear resistance as separate points. Keep the answer concise and to the point.

Common mistakes

  • Saying "addition polymerisation" instead of condensation. Omitting the explanation of tensile strength. Using vague words like "strong" without linking to rope use.
