Explain why poly(propene) and nylon are classified as different types of polymer.

Poly(propene) is used to make plastic containers, whilst nylon is used to make clothing fibres and ropes.
Model answer (4 marks)
Poly(propene) is an addition polymer, formed when propene monomers join together without loss of any small molecule. In contrast, nylon is a condensation polymer, produced by the reaction of two different monomers (an amine and a dicarboxylic acid) with the elimination of a small molecule, namely water.
Examiner tips
- Use the terms "addition polymer" and "condensation polymer" explicitly.
- Show the key difference: no small‑molecule loss vs. water elimination.
- Mention the monomer types (single vs. two different).
Common mistakes
- Confusing the monomer types or saying both are addition polymers.
- Failing to state that nylon releases water.
- Using vague phrases like "different polymer" without the specific classification.
