Model answer (4 marks)

Difference 1: Gamma rays have a much higher frequency (and shorter wavelength) than microwaves.
Difference 2: Gamma rays are used in medicine (e.g. cancer treatment, imaging) whereas microwaves are used for cooking food and communications.
Similarity: Both are transverse electromagnetic waves.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact terms ‘frequency’ and ‘wavelength’ for the difference; mention the typical uses to secure full marks.
  • State the similarity as ‘both are transverse waves’ – this is the wording examiners expect.
  • Keep the answer concise and avoid unnecessary words.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing frequency with wavelength or giving the wrong order (e.g. saying microwaves have higher frequency).
  • Using ‘both travel at the same speed’ as the similarity – this is acceptable but less common than ‘both are transverse waves’.

Mark scheme (4 marks)

  1. Difference 1: gamma rays have a higher frequency than microwaves (or microwaves have a lower frequency than gamma rays)
  2. Difference 2: gamma rays and microwaves have different uses / gamma rays are used in medical imaging or killing cancer cells, whereas microwaves are used for cooking food or communications / satellite TV
  3. Similarity 1: both are transverse waves
  4. Similarity 2 (alternative if similarity 1 not given): both travel at the same speed in a vacuum (3.0 × 10⁸ m/s) / both do not require a medium to travel / both transfer energy
