The electromagnetic spectrum is arranged in order of decreasing frequency (and increasing wavelength). It starts with gamma rays at the highest frequency and shortest wavelength, followed by X‑rays, ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwaves and finally radio waves at the lowest frequency and longest wavelength.
Infrared radiation is used in heating appliances such as infrared heaters and in night‑vision devices.
Radio waves are used for broadcasting radio and television signals, and for wireless communication such as mobile phones.

Examiner tips
- Use the correct order of the spectrum and mention both frequency and wavelength trends. State a single, clear use for each radiation type. Keep the answer concise and use the exact terminology (e.g., "infrared" and "radio waves").
Common mistakes
- Mixing up the order of the spectrum (e.g., putting visible light before infrared). Giving a use that applies to more than one type of radiation. Using vague phrases like "electromagnetic waves" instead of specific types.
