# Microwaves and gamma rays are both members of the electromagnetic spectrum. State two differences and one similarity between microwaves and gamma rays.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Difference 1: gamma rays have a higher frequency than microwaves (or microwaves have a lower frequency than gamma rays)
2. Difference 2: gamma rays and microwaves have different uses / gamma rays are used in medical imaging or killing cancer cells, whereas microwaves are used for cooking food or communications / satellite TV
3. Similarity 1: both are transverse waves
4. Similarity 2 (alternative if similarity 1 not given): both travel at the same speed in a vacuum (3.0 × 10⁸ m/s) / both do not require a medium to travel / both transfer energy
