Model answer (5 marks)

Mitochondria are the sites of aerobic respiration, where glucose is oxidised to produce ATP. Aerobic respiration releases large amounts of energy that the cell can use for work. A cell containing many mitochondria can carry out more respiration simultaneously, producing more ATP and therefore being able to perform more metabolic activity.

A mitochondrion is too small to be resolved by a light microscope. To see it clearly, an electron microscope is required, as it provides the necessary resolution to visualise organelles of this size.

Examiner tips

  • Mention the role of mitochondria in ATP production; link more mitochondria to higher ATP output. State that light microscopy cannot resolve mitochondria; specify electron microscopy as the required tool.

Common mistakes

  • Claiming mitochondria are visible with a light microscope. Forgetting to connect the number of mitochondria with increased energy production.

  1. Mitochondria are where aerobic respiration occurs / takes place
  2. Aerobic respiration releases energy (for the cell)
  3. More mitochondria means more respiration can occur / more energy can be released
