A species is a group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
The five‑kingdom system classifies organisms into:
1. Animals – multicellular, heterotrophic, lack cell walls.
2. Plants – multicellular, autotrophic, have cell walls.
3. Fungi – multicellular or unicellular, heterotrophic, have cell walls.
4. Protists – mostly unicellular eukaryotes, diverse.
5. Prokaryotes – unicellular, lack a nucleus and membrane‑bound organelles.
Organisms are grouped according to shared characteristics such as cell type, nutrition, and presence or absence of a nucleus.

Examiner tips

  • Use the definition of species (interbreed + fertile offspring) for full marks. Name all five kingdoms, but at least three is enough for 1 mark. Mention key distinguishing features of each kingdom.
  • include the fact that prokaryotes lack a nucleus and protists are unicellular eukaryotes to show depth.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing species with genus or family. Failing to mention the requirement of fertile offspring. Listing only two kingdoms or omitting prokaryotes/protists.

  3. The five kingdoms are: animals, plants, fungi, prokaryotes (bacteria) and protists — award 1 mark for correctly naming at least three kingdoms
  4. Organisms are grouped according to shared characteristics / features they have in common
  5. Prokaryotes / bacteria are unicellular and lack a nucleus / have no membrane-bound nucleus OR protists are unicellular eukaryotes
