# Explain what is meant by the term 'species' and describe how the five-kingdom classification system organises living organisms.

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. A species is a group of organisms that can interbreed / mate
2. to produce fertile offspring
3. The five kingdoms are: animals, plants, fungi, prokaryotes (bacteria) and protists — award 1 mark for correctly naming at least three kingdoms
4. Organisms are grouped according to shared characteristics / features they have in common
5. Prokaryotes / bacteria are unicellular and lack a nucleus / have no membrane-bound nucleus OR protists are unicellular eukaryotes
