Binomial nomenclature gives each species a unique two‑part name consisting of the genus and the specific epithet.
The names are written in Latin (or latinised Greek), a standardised language that is not the native tongue of any modern culture, which ensures neutrality and universality.
Because common or local names vary between regions and can refer to different organisms, the scientific name removes this confusion and allows precise identification.
The format is conventionally recognised: the genus is capitalised, the species epithet is lower case, and both words are italicised (or underlined when handwritten), so scientists worldwide can immediately recognise it as a scientific name.
