## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Binomial nomenclature gives each species a unique two-part name consisting of genus and species (epithet).
2. Names are written in Latin (or latinised Greek), which is a standardised language not native to any modern culture, ensuring neutrality and universality.
3. The system prevents confusion caused by common/local names, which can vary between regions or refer to different species.
4. The name is written in a conventionally recognised format — genus capitalised and species epithet in lower case, both italicised (or underlined when handwritten) — allowing scientists worldwide to recognise it as a scientific name.
