A hierarchy of taxa groups organisms that share common ancestry, so classification reflects phylogeny.
The hierarchical structure (domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species) allows organisms to be placed into progressively more specific groups, making it easier to organise and retrieve information about millions of species.
Shared classification allows scientists worldwide to communicate unambiguously about organisms, avoiding confusion caused by different common names in different languages.
Knowing the taxon of an organism allows predictions to be made about its characteristics, because members of the same taxon share traits inherited from a common ancestor.
