Model answer (5 marks)

1. FSH is released by the pituitary gland.
2. FSH stimulates the maturation of an egg in the ovary.
3. Oestrogen is produced by the ovaries and regulates the female reproductive system.
4. LH is released by the pituitary gland and triggers ovulation, the release of an egg.
5. Hormones travel in the blood to reach their target organs.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact terms FSH, LH, oestrogen and the pituitary gland. Show the sequence: pituitary → FSH/LH → ovary → egg maturation/ovulation. Mention that hormones act via the bloodstream.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing FSH with LH or vice‑versa. Forgetting that oestrogen is produced by the ovaries. Omitting the role of the bloodstream as the transport medium.
