Transition metals and Group 1 metals are both found in the periodic table, but they have very different physical and chemical properties. Explain how the properties of transition metals differ from those of Group 1 metals, and suggest why transition metals are more suitable than Group 1 metals for use as structural materials such as bridge supports.

Transition metals have higher melting points than Group 1 metals, so they can withstand the high temperatures encountered in structural applications without softening.
They also have higher densities, giving them greater strength for a given volume.
Transition metals are harder and stronger than Group 1 metals, which means they resist deformation and fracture under load.
Their lower chemical reactivity – they do not react vigorously with water or oxygen – reduces corrosion and preserves structural integrity over time.
These physical and chemical properties mean that transition metals can maintain shape, strength and resistance to environmental attack, making them suitable for bridge supports, whereas Group 1 metals would soften, corrode or fail under such conditions.

Common mistakes
- Confusing Group 1 metals with transition metals in the explanation. Failing to mention the low reactivity or corrosion resistance. Using vague terms like "stronger" without specifying hardness or density.
