# Transition metals and Group 1 metals are both found in the periodic table, but they have very different physical and chemical properties. Explain how the properties of transition metals differ from those of Group 1 metals, and suggest why transition metals are more suitable than Group 1 metals for use as structural materials such as bridge supports.

## Mark scheme (5 marks)

1. Transition metals have higher melting points than Group 1 metals
2. Transition metals have higher densities than Group 1 metals
3. Transition metals are harder / stronger than Group 1 metals
4. Transition metals are much less reactive than Group 1 metals / do not react vigorously with water or oxygen
5. Linking physical/chemical properties to suitability — e.g. high melting point / hardness / low reactivity means transition metals maintain structural integrity / do not corrode or weaken quickly
