Model answer (4 marks)

Red shift means the wavelength of light from galaxies is longer, i.e. shifted towards the red end of the spectrum.

Red shift indicates that galaxies are moving away from us, showing that the universe is expanding.

The fact that more distant galaxies show a greater red shift means they are moving away faster than nearer galaxies.

This relationship is consistent with the universe having started from a single point, supporting the Big Bang theory.

  • Use the exact terms ‘red shift’, ‘wavelength’, ‘moving away’, ‘expanding’, ‘greater red shift’, ‘faster’, ‘single point’, ‘Big Bang’.
