# Scientists have observed that light from almost all distant galaxies is red-shifted, and that galaxies further away show a greater red shift than galaxies that are closer. Describe what these two observations tell us about the universe.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Red shift means the wavelength of light from galaxies is longer / shifted towards the red end of the spectrum
2. Red shift indicates that galaxies are moving away from us / the universe is expanding
3. Greater red shift for more distant galaxies means more distant galaxies are moving away faster
4. This is consistent with the universe having started from a single point / supports the idea that the universe began with a Big Bang
