Explain why the nucleus is essential for a cell to be able to divide and produce new cells.

Model answer (4 marks)
The nucleus contains the cell’s DNA, which carries the instructions for making proteins and for all cell processes. Before a cell can divide, this DNA must be copied or replicated so that each daughter cell receives a complete set of genetic material. Without a nucleus, the new cells would lack a full copy of the DNA and therefore could not function or survive.
Examiner tips
- Use the phrase "contains DNA" and "DNA carries the instructions" to hit the first two points. Mention "replicated before division" to cover the third. Explain the consequence of lacking a nucleus for the fourth point. Keep the answer short and to the point to fit the 4‑mark limit.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to mention DNA replication. Using vague terms like "genetic material" without linking it to the nucleus. Writing a long paragraph instead of concise points, losing marks for lack of focus.
