# Explain why the nucleus is essential for a cell to be able to divide and produce new cells.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. The nucleus contains DNA / genetic material / chromosomes
2. DNA carries the instructions / information for making proteins / for cell processes
3. DNA must be copied / replicated before a cell can divide
4. Without the nucleus, the new cells would not receive a complete set of DNA / genetic information and could not function / survive
