A species of flowering plant native to the UK is known locally as 'bluebell', but the same common name is used for an entirely different species in Scotland. In Spain, a different common name is used for the same plant entirely. Scientists use the binomial name Hyacinthoides non-scripta when referring to this organism in published research.

Examiner tips
- Use the exact wording from the mark scheme – ‘universal’, ‘unique’, ‘genus’, ‘relationships’.
- Show the four points in order, each as a separate sentence or bullet.
- Mention that the binomial name is Latinised and recognised by the International Code of Nomenclature.
Common mistakes
- Using only one or two of the four points, missing the ‘universal’ or ‘relationships’ aspect.
- Confusing common names with binomial names, or not explaining the genus part.
