Scientists classify living organisms into groups so that they can be organised and sorted according to shared characteristics.
This organisation makes it easier to identify and study organisms.
Classification also reflects evolutionary or phylogenetic relationships between organisms.
Using a common, universal system allows scientists worldwide to share and communicate information about organisms.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact wording from the mark scheme – e.g. "organised/sorted", "shared characteristics", "evolutionary/phylogenetic relationships".
  • Show all four points, each as a separate sentence or bullet, to demonstrate full coverage of the marks.

Common mistakes

  • Using vague terms like "grouping" without mentioning shared characteristics.
  • Omitting the evolutionary relationship point or confusing it with taxonomy only.
