Scientists classify living organisms into groups so that they can be organised and sorted according to shared characteristics.
This organisation makes it easier to identify an organism and to recognise an unknown one.
It also provides a universal system that allows scientists worldwide to communicate and share information about organisms.
Finally, classification reflects evolutionary or phylogenetic relationships, showing which organisms are related.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word ‘organise’ and mention ‘shared characteristics’ for the first point. Show how classification aids identification for the second. Mention a universal system for the third. Link classification to evolutionary relationships for the fourth.

Common mistakes

  • Using vague terms like ‘grouping’ without explaining the basis. Forgetting to mention the universal communication aspect. Mixing up classification with taxonomy without noting evolutionary links.
