Model answer (4 marks)

Reflex actions are automatic responses that do not require conscious thought, allowing the body to react very quickly. The impulse travels via a short pathway through the spinal cord (the reflex arc) rather than travelling to the brain first, which reduces response time. This rapid response protects the body from harm or damage, helping the person survive.

Examiner tips

Use the word "automatic" and "very fast" to show understanding of reflexes.
Explain the short pathway via the spinal cord to justify the speed.
Mention protection from harm to link to survival.

Common mistakes

Confusing a reflex with a voluntary action.
Failing to mention the spinal cord pathway.
