# Explain why reflex actions are important for survival.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Reflex actions are automatic / do not require conscious thought
2. Reflex actions are very fast / rapid responses
3. This protects the body from harm / damage
4. Because the impulse travels via a short pathway through the spinal cord (reflex arc) rather than to the brain first, reducing response time
