Reflex actions are automatic and do not require conscious thought from the brain.
They occur very quickly, faster than a voluntary response.
This rapid response protects the body from damage, harm or injury.
The nerve impulse travels via the spinal cord (a spinal reflex) rather than to the brain first, reducing the length of the pathway.

Examiner tips
- Use the term ‘automatic’ and ‘spinal reflex’. Show the speed advantage over voluntary action. Mention protection from injury. Keep sentences short and to the point.
Common mistakes
- Confusing reflex with voluntary action. Forgetting to mention the spinal cord. Using vague terms like ‘fast’ without explaining why it matters.
