# Explain why reflex actions are important for survival.

> A person accidentally touches a hot surface and immediately pulls their hand away before they are consciously aware of the pain.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Reflex actions are automatic / do not require conscious thought from the brain
2. This means the response happens very quickly / faster than a voluntary response
3. This protects the body from damage / harm / injury
4. The nerve impulse travels via the spinal cord (spinal reflex) rather than to the brain first, reducing the length of the pathway
