A person touches a very hot surface and quickly pulls their hand away before they are aware of the pain.

Model answer (4 marks)

Reflex actions are automatic and do not require conscious thought.
They are very fast, occurring more quickly than a voluntary response.
The impulse bypasses the brain and passes through the spinal cord, so the response occurs before the person is aware of the stimulus.
This rapid, automatic action protects the body from damage, harm or injury.

Examiner tips

Use the term ‘automatic’ and ‘spinal cord’ to show understanding of the pathway.
Mention that the response happens before awareness to link speed and protection.
Keep the answer concise – 4 points can be covered in 4 short sentences.

Common mistakes

Failing to mention the spinal cord bypassing the brain.
Using vague phrases like ‘quick reaction’ without explaining why it is important for survival.
