# Explain why reflex actions are important for survival.

> A person touches a very hot surface and quickly pulls their hand away before they are aware of the pain.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Reflex actions are automatic / do not require conscious thought
2. Reflex actions are very fast / happen more quickly than a voluntary response
3. This protects the body from damage / harm / injury
4. The impulse bypasses the brain (passes through the spinal cord) so the response occurs before the person is aware of the stimulus
