Model answer (4 marks)

Nuclear fuel is a non‑renewable resource because it is finite and cannot be replenished while it is being used. The amount of uranium available will eventually be exhausted.

It is not a fossil fuel because fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) are formed from ancient biological remains, whereas uranium is a mined mineral ore that does not originate from organic matter.

Examiner tips

  • Use the definition of non‑renewable – finite and not replenished during use.
  • Explain the difference in origin – uranium is a mineral, fossil fuels are organic.
  • Keep the answer concise and use the exact terminology.
  • Mention both points in separate sentences for clarity.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing ‘renewable’ with ‘sustainable’ or ‘recyclable’.
  • Saying ‘uranium is a fossil fuel’ or ‘fossil fuels are minerals’ – mixing up the definitions.
  • Leaving out the reason why nuclear fuel is non‑renewable (finite supply).

  1. Nuclear fuel cannot be replenished whilst it is being used / nuclear fuel will eventually run out / nuclear fuel is finite
  2. This makes it non-renewable (because a non-renewable resource is one that cannot be replenished whilst it is being used)
  3. Fossil fuels are coal, oil and gas (formed from ancient organic matter / biological remains)
  4. Nuclear fuel (uranium) is not formed from ancient organic / biological remains / is a mined mineral ore, so it is not a fossil fuel
