Model answer (4 marks)

Renewable energy sources are unreliable or intermittent – for example, solar power does not generate electricity at night or during cloudy weather, and wind turbines only operate when the wind is blowing.

Because of this variability, renewable technologies cannot produce as large a continuous amount of electricity as fossil‑fuel plants, which run at high capacity factors.

The technology to capture and convert renewable energy is still developing; the infrastructure (e.g. large‑scale solar farms, wind farms, grid connections) is less mature and more expensive to build than the established fossil‑fuel power stations.

These factors mean that, for large‑scale electricity generation, renewables are less reliable, produce lower output and require significant investment in new technology and infrastructure.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact terms ‘unreliable/intermittent’, give a specific example, mention lower capacity factor, and note the need for new infrastructure

Common mistakes

  • Confusing intermittency with low efficiency, omitting the example of solar or wind, or failing to mention the need for new infrastructure

Mark scheme (4 marks)

  1. Renewable energy resources are unreliable / intermittent
  2. Correct example of an unreliable renewable resource (e.g. solar does not work at night or in bad weather / wind only blows intermittently)
  3. Renewable resources cannot produce as large an amount of energy as fossil fuels / lower energy output per unit
  4. Renewable energy technology has required significant development to harness energy sources efficiently / infrastructure is less established than for fossil fuels
