Model answer (4 marks)

1. The nerve pathway is short – the signal travels from the sensory receptor to the spinal cord and back to the muscle via a reflex arc.
2. Because it does not travel to the brain for processing, the response is very rapid.
3. The speed reduces the risk of damage or injury to the body.
4. The response occurs automatically, without conscious thought or the brain deciding what to do.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word "rapid" and explain the short pathway; link speed to injury prevention. Mention "automatic" and the lack of conscious decision. Show the reflex arc: receptor → spinal cord → effector.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the role of the brain with the spinal cord; writing that the brain is involved. Failing to mention the reflex arc or the lack of conscious decision. Using vague terms like "fast" without explaining why.

Mark scheme (4 marks)

  1. Rapid: the nerve pathway is short / does not travel to the brain for processing
  2. Rapid: this reduces the risk of damage / injury to the body (credit in context of why speed matters)
  3. Automatic: the response occurs without conscious thought / without the brain deciding what to do
  4. The impulse travels along a reflex arc through the spinal cord (coordination centre) and back to the effector without a conscious decision being made
