# Explain why a reflex action is described as both rapid and automatic.

> A person accidentally touches a sharp pin and immediately pulls their hand away before they are aware of feeling any pain.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Rapid: the nerve pathway is short / does not travel to the brain for processing
2. Rapid: this reduces the risk of damage / injury to the body (credit in context of why speed matters)
3. Automatic: the response occurs without conscious thought / without the brain deciding what to do
4. The impulse travels along a reflex arc through the spinal cord (coordination centre) and back to the effector without a conscious decision being made
