Model answer (4 marks)

High temperature increases the rate of transpiration.
Dry, low‑humidity conditions increase the concentration gradient of water vapour, speeding up diffusion out of the leaf through the stomata.
Water loss via transpiration then exceeds water uptake by the roots.
Consequently cells lose water, turgor pressure falls and the plant wilts.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word ‘explain’ to show cause–effect links; include all four points in logical order.
  • Show the sequence: temperature → transpiration rate → gradient → water loss > uptake → loss of turgor → wilting.
  • Use correct terminology: transpiration, stomata, turgor pressure, concentration gradient.
  • Keep the answer concise – 4 marks, so one sentence per point is sufficient.

Common mistakes

  • Writing only one or two of the four required points.
  • Using vague terms such as ‘more water loss’ without linking to temperature or humidity.
  • Forgetting to mention turgor pressure or the final effect of wilting.
