Model answer (4 marks)

A permanent magnet has a permanent magnetic field and is always magnetic.
An induced magnet only becomes magnetic when it is placed in or near a magnetic field.
When the induced magnet is removed from the field it loses most or all of its magnetism.
The pole of an induced magnet nearest the inducing magnet is always opposite, so it is attracted to the inducing magnet.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact phrases ‘permanent magnetic field’ and ‘induced magnet’. Show the cause–effect sequence: field → magnetism → loss of magnetism. Mention the opposite pole attraction to justify the attraction.
  • Include all four points in a logical order to cover all marks.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the terms ‘permanent’ and ‘induced’. Forgetting that the induced magnet loses its magnetism when removed. Not stating that the nearest pole is opposite and therefore attracted.

  1. A permanent magnet produces its own magnetic field at all times / is always magnetic
  2. An induced magnet only becomes magnetic when placed in / near a magnetic field
  3. When removed from the magnetic field, an induced magnet loses most / all of its magnetism
