Model answer (4 marks)

The pancreas secretes pancreatic juice, which contains the enzymes trypsin, chymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase, lipase and amylase. These enzymes are released into the duodenum. Trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypeptidase are proteases that cleave peptide bonds, converting proteins into small peptides and free amino acids. Lipase hydrolyses triglycerides into glycerol and fatty acids. Amylase (carbohydrase) breaks down starch into maltose, maltotriose and glucose. Thus pancreatic enzymes complete the digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the small intestine.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing pancreatic enzymes with gastric enzymes, omitting the role of amylase, or not specifying the products of each enzyme
