Model answer (4 marks)

1. Large, brightly coloured petals attract insects.
2. Petals are scented and/or produce nectar to lure insects.
3. Sticky stigma captures pollen from insects.
4. Anthers are positioned inside the flower and firmly attached, brushing against insects to transfer pollen onto them.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact wording from the mark scheme (e.g., "large and/or brightly coloured petals"),
  • Show each adaptation as a separate point to match the 4 marks.
  • Include both visual and olfactory attractants to cover all aspects of the scheme.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing up the function of petals and sepals; students sometimes describe sepals as attracting insects.
  • Omitting the sticky stigma or the position of the anthers; students often leave out one of the key adaptations.
  • Using vague terms like "good-looking" instead of "large and brightly coloured".
