Model answer (4 marks)

Rod cells are photoreceptors that are highly sensitive to low light intensities, making them essential for night vision. They provide monochromatic (black‑and‑white) vision and are distributed mainly around the periphery of the retina, largely absent from the fovea.

Cone cells are photoreceptors that respond best to bright light and are responsible for colour vision. They detect different wavelengths, allowing us to see colours. Cone cells are concentrated in the fovea, the central part of the retina.

Examiner tips

  • Use the exact terms ‘rod cells’ and ‘cone cells’, mention ‘night vision’ and ‘colour vision’, and state their retinal locations (periphery vs fovea).
  • Show the contrast: rods = low light, monochrome, peripheral; cones = bright light, colour, foveal.
  • Keep the answer concise – 4 points can be covered in two short paragraphs or numbered points.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing rods with cones or vice versa; e.g., saying rods are for colour vision. Forgetting to mention the retinal distribution (periphery vs fovea). Using vague language such as ‘help with vision’ without specifying light sensitivity or colour detection.
