Model answer (5 marks)

Glucose is a monosaccharide that serves as the main fuel for cellular respiration, providing energy when oxidised to CO₂ and H₂O.
Starch is a polysaccharide formed by the linkage of many glucose units.
In plants, starch functions as a storage molecule, accumulating in chloroplasts and other tissues.
Its insoluble nature allows it to be stored without interfering with cellular processes.
When energy is required, starch is hydrolysed back into glucose, which can then enter metabolic pathways.

  • Use the exact terms ‘monosaccharide’, ‘polysaccharide’, ‘storage molecule’, ‘insoluble’, and ‘hydrolysed’
  • Show the link between glucose and starch clearly
  • Mention plants as the storage site
