Describe how gibberellins and ethene are used commercially in the food industry. In your answer, refer to the role of each hormone.

Model answer (4 marks)
Gibberellins are plant hormones that trigger seed germination. Commercially they are added to barley in brewing and malting to stimulate growth and improve malt quality, and they are used to produce seedless fruit and increase fruit size in horticulture.
Ethene (ethylene) is a gaseous hormone that controls the ripening of fruits. In the food industry it is applied to unripe fruit, such as bananas, to induce ripening during or after transport, ensuring fruit reaches consumers at the desired stage of ripeness.

Examiner tips
- Use the exact terms ‘gibberellins’ and ‘ethene’. Mention the specific commercial uses (brewing, seedless fruit, ripening). Keep each point short and to the point to fit the 4‑mark structure.
Common mistakes
- Confusing ethene with ethylene or using the wrong spelling. Failing to link the hormone to its specific commercial application. Writing overly long explanations that exceed the 4‑mark limit.
Mark scheme (4 marks)
- Gibberellins initiate / trigger seed germination
- Gibberellins are used commercially, e.g. in brewing / malting barley / to produce seedless fruit / to increase fruit size
- Ethene controls the ripening of fruits
- Ethene is used commercially to ripen fruit during / after transport, e.g. bananas are picked unripe and ripened using ethene gas
