Describe four properties of transition metals that make them different from the alkali metals in Group 1.

Model answer (4 marks)
Transition metals have much higher melting points than alkali metals (except mercury). They are also much harder, stronger and denser than alkali metals. Transition metals can form ions with a variety of oxidation states, whereas alkali metals only form +1 ions. Finally, transition metals and their compounds can act as catalysts, a property that alkali metals lack.
Examiner tips
- Use the word "higher" or "much higher" for melting points and density; include "except mercury". Mention the variable oxidation states explicitly. State that alkali metals only give +1. Cite catalysis as a key property. Keep each point short and to the point.
Common mistakes
- Saying alkali metals have higher melting points; confusing density with hardness; omitting that alkali metals only give +1; failing to mention catalysis.
