# Describe four properties of transition metals that make them different from the alkali metals in Group 1.

## Mark scheme (4 marks)

1. Transition metals have higher melting points than alkali metals (except mercury).
2. Transition metals are much harder / stronger / denser than alkali metals.
3. Transition metals form ions with different / variable charges (oxidation states), whereas alkali metals form ions with only a +1 charge.
4. Transition metals / their compounds can act as catalysts, whereas alkali metals do not.
