Model answer (4 marks)
Nervous system uses electrical signals (nerve impulses) whereas endocrine system uses chemical signals (hormones). Nervous impulses travel along neurones; hormones travel in the blood. Nervous system responses are rapid/faster; endocrine system responses are slower. Nervous system responses are short‑lived; endocrine system responses are long‑lasting.
Examiner tips
- Use the exact terms ‘nerve impulses’ and ‘hormones’.
- Show the contrast in speed and duration clearly.
- Include the routes of transmission (neurones vs blood).
Common mistakes
- Confusing the speed of responses, e.g. saying endocrine is faster.
- Omitting the route of signal transmission.
