Wind‑pollinated pollen grains are
1. smaller and lighter than insect‑pollinated grains.
2. produced in far greater numbers.
3. have smooth surfaces with no spikes or hooks.

Insect‑pollinated pollen grains are
1. larger and heavier.
2. produced in smaller quantities.
3. have spikes or hooks on the surface.
4. are sticky, allowing attachment to insects or the stigma.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word ‘compare’ to list contrasting features in bullet form.
  • Mention size, quantity, surface texture and stickiness – the four key points.
  • Keep each point short and use exam‑specific terminology (e.g. ‘sticky’).

Common mistakes

  • Confusing the direction of comparison (e.g. saying wind pollen is sticky).
  • Omitting one of the four key contrasting features.

Mark scheme (4 marks)

  1. Wind-pollinated pollen grains are smaller / lighter than insect-pollinated pollen grains (which are larger / heavier)
  2. Wind-pollinated flowers produce greater numbers of pollen grains, whereas insect-pollinated flowers produce fewer
  3. Wind-pollinated pollen grains have smooth surfaces (no spikes or hooks), whereas insect-pollinated pollen grains have spikes or hooks on the outside
  4. Insect-pollinated pollen grains are sticky (to attach to insects / stigma), whereas wind-pollinated grains are not sticky
