Model answer (5 marks)

Alkanes are hydrocarbons composed only of carbon and hydrogen atoms.

Saturated means that all the carbon–carbon bonds are single bonds; there are no double or triple bonds.

When the carbon chain length increases the van der Waals forces between the molecules become larger, so the boiling point rises.

With a longer chain the alkane is less flammable – shorter chains ignite more readily.

Short‑chain alkanes are better fuels because they are more flammable, they ignite more easily and their lower boiling points allow them to vapourise quickly, giving a higher rate of combustion.

Examiner tips

  • Use the word "saturated" to describe the absence of double bonds. Mention the rise in boiling point due to increased London dispersion forces. State that longer chains are less flammable. Explain that lower boiling point and higher flammability make short chains better fuels.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing saturated with unsaturated. Forgetting to link boiling point to chain length. Claiming longer chains are more flammable instead of less.

Mark scheme (5 marks)

  1. Alkanes contain hydrogen and carbon atoms only (are hydrocarbons)
  2. Saturated means alkanes have no carbon–carbon double bonds (all single C–C bonds)
  3. As the carbon chain gets longer, the boiling point increases
  4. As the carbon chain gets longer, the alkane becomes less flammable (shorter chains are more flammable)
  5. Shorter-chain alkanes make better fuels because they are more flammable / ignite more easily / have a lower boiling point so vaporise more readily
