Alkanes and alkenes are both hydrocarbons produced during cracking. Describe how bromine water can be used to distinguish between an alkane and an alkene, and explain why the two types of hydrocarbon give different results in this test.

Model answer (5 marks)
Add a few drops of bromine water to a sample of each hydrocarbon.
1. The alkene turns the orange bromine water colourless (decolourisation).
2. The alkane leaves the bromine water orange.
The alkene is unsaturated – it contains a C=C double bond. The double bond is electron‑rich and reacts with Br₂ to give a dibrominated product, consuming the bromine and removing the colour. The alkane is saturated; it has only C–H and C–C single bonds and does not react with Br₂ under these conditions, so the orange colour remains.

Examiner tips
- Show the two distinct observations – colour change vs no change. Explain the role of the C=C bond in the alkene’s reactivity. Use the exact terms ‘unsaturated’ and ‘saturated’. Include the word ‘decolourise’ for the alkene.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the colour change direction (writing colourless to orange). Forgetting to mention the unsaturation of the alkene. Using vague terms like ‘reactive’ without linking to the double bond.
Mark scheme (5 marks)
- Add bromine water to each hydrocarbon (sample)
- The alkene decolourises / turns the bromine water from orange to colourless
- The alkane does not decolourise / does not change the colour of bromine water (stays orange)
- Alkenes are unsaturated / have a carbon–carbon double bond
- The double bond makes alkenes more reactive than alkanes (so alkenes react with bromine / alkanes do not react with bromine water)
