A tumble dryer transfers electrical energy to kinetic energy and thermal energy. Explain why a tumble dryer with a higher power rating will transfer more energy than one with a lower power rating when both are used for the same amount of time.

Model answer (4 marks)
A tumble dryer with a higher power rating transfers more energy because power is the rate of energy transfer. The power rating tells how much energy is transferred each second. A higher power rating therefore means more energy is transferred every second. Energy transferred equals power multiplied by time (E = Pt). For the same operating time, the dryer with the higher power rating will have a larger Pt and so transfer more total energy.
Examiner tips
- Use the definition of power (energy per unit time) to justify the higher energy transfer.
- Show the equation E = Pt and state that time is the same for both dryers.
- Explain that a higher P gives a larger product P·t.
- Keep the answer concise and use the exact terminology.

- Power rating shows the energy transferred per second (by the appliance)
- A higher power rating means more energy is transferred every second
- Energy transferred equals power multiplied by time (E = Pt)
- So for the same time, the appliance with the higher power rating transfers more total energy
